Man accused of soliciting child prostitution; Denver police seek more victims
Denver police are seeking more information about a man accused of soliciting child prostitution, as the department believes there may be additional victims.
Though Denver Police Department officials declined to identify the suspect due to concerns about the impact of “pre-trial publicity,” an arrest affidavit in the case identified him as Eric Douglas McCoy, 54.
Officers were notified in March that several Northfield High School students had reported suspicious notes left on their cars in the parking lot of a Target near the school, according to the affidavit as well as a news release from the department.
The notes contained information about contacting an individual through an encrypted email address. The affidavit said McCoy is believed to have placed the notes on two separate occasions in January and March.
Investigators with the Denver police’s human trafficking unit contacted the email address and pretended to be a 15-year-old girl. McCoy is alleged to have arranged to pick up the girl and detailed a sex act he planned to do.
Investigators then arrested McCoy on March 30. He remained jailed on Tuesday and faces charges of solicitation of child prostitution, stalking and attempted sexual assault. His bail has been set at $50,000.
A Colorado Bureau of Investigation background report indicates McCoy was previously found guilty of attempted sexual assault of a child in Jefferson County in 2008. He also faced charges alleging he attempted to lure a child using the internet stemming from the same case, but those charges were dismissed. He was sentenced to two years of probation and had to complete a sex offender intensive supervision program.
It was unclear if he was required to register as a sex offender. He did not appear on a search of the Colorado sex offender registry Tuesday.
Denver police believe more young people may have been contacted by McCoy. Anyone with additional information about possible victims is asked to contact the Denver Police Human Trafficking Unit at 720-913-6060.
