CDOT snowplow driver charged in fatal I-70 crash involving girls’ hockey team

The driver of a Colorado Department of Transportation snowplow that was involved in a fatal January crash on Interstate 70 has now been criminally charged.

The crash happened just before 9 a.m. Jan. 29 on I-70 in Clear Creek County, east of Loveland Pass. The driver of a van carrying a girls’ hockey team from California was killed after the snowplow crashed into the van and several other vehicles. The driver, 38-year-old Manuel Alejandro Lorenzana-Villegas of Chatsworth, California, was the father of one of the players on the team.

The van was carrying a total of 10 people; eight others, including four children and four adults, were injured in the crash.

Investigators determined the snowplow was traveling westbound on I-70 when the driver, Colton Wiedman, 29, lost control and drove through the median into the eastbound lane. The plow hit the van, sending it down into an embankment.

The plow also hit a pickup truck, also sending it through the median, where it hit a coupe driving westbound. The occupants of those vehicles were not injured.

Wiedman faces charges of one count of careless driving causing death, four counts of careless driving causing serious bodily injury, three counts of careless driving causing bodily injury and one count of failure to drive in a designated lane, Colorado State Patrol officials said in a news release Thursday.

The careless driving charges are all class 1 traffic misdemeanors, while the failure to drive in a designated lane charge is a class A traffic infraction.

The hockey team, the Santa Clarita Lady Flyers, was traveling into the Denver area for a tournament and ended up playing and winning a game the day following the crash. They played five games in three days in Littleton, going 4-1, and won the tournament.
