Avalanche edge Oilers in shootout as Brock Nelson hits 1,000th NHL game | 5 takeaways

The games don’t mean anything anymore, but the wins are still impressive.

Colorado had nothing to play for while Edmonton still has plenty to play for, but it didn’t matter. The Avalanche scored three times in the shootout to take down the Oilers by a score of 2-1.

Here are five takeaways from the win.

  1. Another milestone for an Avalanche player, as Brock Nelson hit 1,000 career games on Monday. Jared Bednar had said last week he’d love to get Nelson some rest, and it sounded like he was having a hard time convincing Nelson, among others, to take a night off. Now that he’s hit this impressive milestone, maybe he’ll get a night off because it’s been a long season for the 34-year-old.
  2. The experimentation continued with nothing left to play for. Colorado tried Nicolas Roy in the bumper spot on the top unit to see if a right-handed shot would give the Avalanche a different look. No real offense came from it, but it doesn’t hurt to play around with things at this time of the year.
  3. There’s a lot of momentum in Edmonton to get Evan Bouchard the Norris Trophy this season. Watching him in the defensive zone … that doesn’t look like a Norris Trophy winner to me.
  4. Is it too much to make of Scott Wedgewood getting the call against the last playoff team on the Avalanche schedule? And guess what? He played really well again. At this point, it would be a surprise if he’s not starting Game 1 in the first round.
  5. In a completely meaningless game, Zakhar Bardakov played less than seven minutes. The Avalanche essentially went down to three lines in the third period, a strange call when taking the load off of some players would be ideal at this time of year.

Avalanche 2, Oilers 1

What happened: Colorado shot 100% in the shootout for the win.

What went right: Cale Makar is on the road trip, and don’t be surprised if he dresses Tuesday in Calgary to get some game action in before the playoffs. The Avalanche gave Artturi Lehkonen the night off to rest and will likely alternate him with another veteran on Tuesday.

What went wrong: If you’re going to take a penalty when you’re already shorthanded, at least make it hilarious. Parker Kelly got busted in the third period grabbing the puck and throwing it like a softball, which you’re not allowed to do. Luckily, the Avalanche killed off the 5-on-3.

Avalanche goal scorers: Malinski (8)

Oilers goal scorers: McDavid (48)

Between the pipes: Another great night for Wedgewood, who finished with 30 saves.

What’s next: The Avalanche head to Calgary to take on the Flames on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
