Second victim dies from North Denver shooting, family mourns and launches fundraiser

The man shot in Russell Square Park on April 5 died Sunday after being in critical condition for a week, and investigators identified a possible suspect, according to the Denver Police Department.

Police said they responded to a shooting at 6 p.m. April 5 in the 3600 block of Vine Street near Russell Square Park, and they identified two victims: a 43-year-old woman and an 18-year-old male.

The victims were attending a family gathering when an exchange of gunfire broke out between an unknown occupant in a vehicle driving past the park and at least one member of the gathering, according to authorities.

Investigators identified a 34-year-old male attendee of the family gathering as a suspect who allegedly shot the female victim during the exchange.

When the investigators presented their findings to the Denver District Attorney’s Office, prosecutors determined the suspect would not be charged with homicide due to “no reasonable likelihood of conviction.” They said they are exploring other possible charges for the suspect, according to the police.

Investigators found the abandoned vehicle involved in the shooting four hours afterwards. Authorities have not yet identified the suspect(s) who were in the vehicle.

Shy-La Metcalfe said that her son, Pharrow Ware, was the 18-year-old male victim killed in the shooting on a GoFundMe post.

“He just wanted a better life, to be great, and to show others that no matter where you come from, you can achieve your dreams because dreams are where it starts,” Metcalfe wrote on the post. “I can honestly say he was the best part of me and his father.”

Metcalfe launched a GoFundMe with the goal of reaching $20,000, and more than $11,000 has been raised from over 100 donations.
