Denver police modifies two patrol districts

Denver Police Department officials on Thursday announced the department will modify two of its patrol districts in the northeast and downtown sections of the city.

The affected districts are Patrol Districts Two and Six. District Two will be expanded to take some of the burden off of officers in District Six, who patrol the downtown areas of Denver, while allowing for District Two officers to absorb urban neighborhoods adjacent to downtown, the department said in a news release.

Under the new boundaries, District Two will absorb the Cheeseman Park and City Park West neighborhoods from District Six, with the affected areas being from North Downing Street to North York Street and East 8th Avenue to East 23rd Avenue. The change will become effective at 6 a.m. on Monday.

The change will not affect how residents can reach Denver police during an emergency, but will change what commander and community resource officers serve the affected areas, police said.

DPD Chief Ron Thomas said in the release that the change comes after getting feedback from community groups.

“These modifications are a combination of feedback from community groups and the development and population increase of downtown Denver, which requires a more structural response,” Thomas said. “This will make it so that officers in District Six can focus on the core of downtown, while their counterparts in District Two focus on the outlying area. In anticipation of District Two serving more residents and area, we have allocated them with more personnel in recent months.”

This is the first change to DPD’s district boundaries since 2015. Approximately 14,700 residents will be added to District Two with the change, as well as two hospitals.
