Ex-Loveland police officer sentenced after sexually assaulting minor
A former Loveland Police Department officer was sentenced to 17 years in prison this week after he sexually assaulted a minor while on duty.
Dylan Miller, 30, was on duty in Loveland on the evening of Aug. 3, 2023 through the early morning of the next day. At North Lake Park, Miller spoke with the victim, a 15-year-old girl, and her friend, telling the friend to leave, before he guided the girl to a more secluded area of the park and sexually assaulted her after removing his body camera, according to a news release from the Department of Justice.
He was found guilty by a jury in December of depriving the minor of her civil rights while acting under color of law, the release said.
Miller was sentenced Monday by a federal judge in Denver. Under the terms of his sentence, he will have to serve five years of supervised release after his 17-year prison sentence is over. The release did not say if he will be required to register as a sex offender.
In the release, U.S. Attorney for the District of Colorado Peter McNeilly said Miller abused his power and betrayed the victim’s trust, calling it “abhorrent.”
Amanda Koldjeski, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Denver field office, thanked the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office for assisting in the investigation and thanked the LPD for its cooperation.
“The actions of Mr. Miller were not only harmful to the individual he swore under oath to protect, but they also undermined public trust and confidence in law enforcement. The FBI will not tolerate those who abuse their positions of authority,” Koldjeski said in the release.
Miller was arrested in November 2023 and also fired by the department after police learned of the assault the previous month. He initially faced charges of kidnapping, sexual assault of a child, unlawful sexual conduct by a peace officer, sexual assault, official oppression and official misconduct.
Before working in Loveland, Miller was a police officer with the Durango Police Department from 2020 until early 2022.
