Colorado meets Los Angeles Kings in playoffs for first time in over 20 years | 2026 Avalanche Playoffs Preview

It’s been over two decades since the Avalanche and Kings met in the Stanley Cup playoffs.

That long drought ends Sunday at Ball Arena as the teams get together in the postseason for the first time since 2002.

Here is a look at the previous two meetings:

2001 Western Conference semifinals

Result: Avalanche win series 4-3

What happened: This series had the Avs on their heels. Heavily favored Colorado was supposed to have no problem with Los Angeles on its way to the Stanley Cup. That was hardly the case. The Kings won Game 1 in overtime before the Avs won the next three to take command of the series. But Kings goalie Felix Potvin got hot and shut out the Avs in Games 5 and 6. Colorado won Game 7, 5-1, on its way to a title, but in the process lost Peter Forsberg to a ruptured spleen.

2002 Western Conference quarterfinals

Result: Avalanche win series 4-3

What happened: The defending champion Avalanche ran into the Kings the following year, but this time in the first round. Like in 2001, Colorado jumped out to a 3-1 series lead but couldn’t close it out until Game 7. Colorado won 4-0 in Game 7. The Avs won another seven-game series in the next round against the Sharks before falling in the conference finals to the Red Wings. That series also went seven games.
