Avalanche to start Scott Wedgewood against Kings in Game 1
Scott Wedgewood has earned his first career playoff start.
Avalanche coach Jared Bednar was cagey on Saturday afternoon, but he spilled the beans just ahead of the puck dropping between the Colorado Avalanche and Los Angeles Kings. It will be Wedgewood, not Mackenzie Blackwood, starting in net for the Avalanche in Game 1 on Sunday.
Wedgewood is coming off far and away the best season of his NHL career. He led the NHL with a 2.02 goals-against average and a .921 save percentage. His 43 starts were the most he’s ever had in a single season, and he won 31 of those starts, finishing with four shutouts.
Blackwood will back up Wedgewood and is expected to see action at some point during the series, as Bednar has been open about his plan to rotate goaltenders in the postseason, just as he did during the regular season. Blackwood started all seven postseason games against Dallas last spring.
This will be the first career playoff start for Wedgewood, but he at least has some experience in net at this time of the year. He has entered four playoff games in relief, totaling over 120 minutes of playing time. In those four games, he posted an .892 save percentage.
Game 1 between the Avalanche and the Kings is set for 1 p.m.
