Colorado races go the distance: Two half marathons land among nation’s best

Half marathons are becoming an increasingly popular race, with about 2 million runners participating in the race annually, according to USA Today.

Two half marathons in Colorado made USA Today 10Best’s recent list of the best in the country.

USA Today 10Best is a readers’ choice awards program that shines a spotlight on the best in destinations, food and drink, hotels, and things to do. An expert panel selects the nominees and readers vote to determine the ten winners in each category.

The Slacker Half Marathon in Georgetown took ninth place on the list. According to USA Today, this race is the world’s highest half marathon. Runners begin at the base of Loveland Ski Area and then descend more than 2,000 feet down the rest of the course. Racers run through wetlands, historic mining sites, and waterfalls. There’s also a family-friendly post-race party at City Park in Georgetown after the event.

The Rim Rock Half Marathon in Grand Junction was ranked tenth. The race goes through Colorado National Monument, where runners can admire the plateaus, canyons and red sandstone monoliths.

The IU Health 500 Festival Mini-Marathon in Indianapolis, Indiana took first place.
