Two injured backcountry skiers rescued in two days near Aspen
Two injured backcountry skiers were rescued over the span of two days near Aspen, Pitkin County authorities said.
The first incident took place Saturday morning, involving one member in a party of four on Mace Peak, according to a news release from the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office.
Emergency dispatch received a medical SOS call around 9:45 a.m. Saturday morning, which was forwarded to Mountain Rescue Aspen, according to the release. Four members of the response team were in the area at the time of the SOS and contacted the party who sent the message; they then contacted Flight for Life and activated additional teams to help evacuate the patient.
After they were picked up by the helicopter, the patient was taken to Aspen Valley Health for additional care, according to the release. Altogether, 16 responders were involved in their rescue.
The patient’s condition and extent of their injuries was not released by the office.
The very next morning, responders received another medical SOS from a party near Lindley hut around 11:45 a.m., according to a separate news release from the office.
One member in the party had suffered a knee injury, and had begun self-extracting, according to the release. Responders were able to meet them with an emergency sled and evacuate them from the field.
Sixteen responders were also involved in the second rescue, according to the release. The patient’s condition and the extent of their injuries were also not released
