Another backcountry skier rescued in mountains in Pitkin County
A backcountry skier was evacuated by Mountain Rescue Aspen teams on Sunday after sustaining a knee injury, marking MRA’s second backcountry rescue in the area in two days.
According to Mountain Rescue Aspen, the Pitkin County Regional Emergency Dispatch Center received a medical SOS at about 11:46 a.m. on Sunday from the Lindley Hut area in the Elk Mountains. One member of a group had sustained a knee injury.
Three members of MRA were already skiing in the area, and after communicating with the group, MRA dispatched those members and a team of three members from the MRA cabin with more equipment.
The injured skier and their group were able to start self-extricating, speeding up the rescue. MRA retrieved the emergency sled from the Lindley Hut and met up with the patient, evacuating them from the field.
There were 16 MRA members involved in this rescue, and all team members were out of the field at 3 p.m.
This incident comes after another backcountry skier was rescued from Mace Peak, also in the Elk Range near Aspen, on Saturday morning.
MRA and the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office remind backcountry skiers to be prepared and carry a satellite communication device for emergencies. MRA also noted that hazards exist close to the surface during this spring season and encouraged caution.
