Ex-Broncos coach Gary Kubiak expects a ‘lot of laughs’ and ‘stories’ at ‘Night of Champions’

Around the start of the year, Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning reached out to his former Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak about his planning for a public celebration of their 2015 Super Bowl-winning team.

Kubiak was all for it.

“I think it’s really cool,” he said.

Manning’s brainchild will come to fruition at “Night of Champions” at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Denver’s Paramount Theatre. A 10-year reunion celebration will be held for the team that defeated Carolina 24-10 in Super Bowl 50 on Feb. 7, 2016, in Santa Clara, Calif.

The event is being put on by Omaha Productions, a company owned by Manning. On stage talking about the 2015 season will be Manning, Kubiak, Hall of Fame outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware, future Hall of Fame outside linebacker and current free agent Von Miller, All-Pro cornerback Aqib Talib, Pro Bowl safety T.J. Ward and Pro Bowl wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders. CBS sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson will serve as moderator.

“The great thing about it is it will be a very loose environment, so I think there will be a lot of laughs and a lot of stories told and things that people probably don’t know a lot about that went on during the course of the season,” Kubiak told The Denver Gazette. “That’s what I’m looking forward to the most, it being a very relaxed atmosphere.”

In addition to those on stage, other players and coaches and personnel from the team were invited to attend. Tackle Ryan Harris, who will be on hand, said as many as two dozen others could attend and sit in a special section.

The Broncos last October held a 10-year reunion for the team in conjunction with Denver’s dramatic 33-32 win over the New York Giants in Week 7 at Empower Field. Members of the 2015 team spent the weekend reminiscing about that season.

Now, the public will be able to watch the reminiscing. Tickets remain available at ParamountDenver.com.

“I’m just very honored to be a part of it,” said Kubiak, who is scheduled to arrive Wednesday morning in Denver from his home in Plantersville, Texas. “It’s a great group of guys going to be there. That great season will always be something that will be very dear to us. … I’ve seen a few (such celebrations) that have been done by Baltimore and the (Indianapolis) Colts.”

The Ravens held a public reunion celebration in 2022 of their Super Bowl XXXV win in January 2001. The Indianapolis Colts held a public celebration last year of their Super Bowl XLI win in February 2007 and it was put on by Omaha Productions. Manning led the Colts to a 29-17 victory over Chicago for his first Super Bowl ring and then won his second a decade ago with Denver.

Kubiak was a Broncos backup quarterback behind Hall of Fame inductee John Elway from 1983-91 and was offensive coordinator from 1995-2005 before returning as head coach from 2015-16. He served under Mike Shanahan for Super Bowl wins in the 1997 and 1998 seasons.

After the first Super Bowl win, owner Pat Bowlen famously declared while handing the Vince Lombardi Trophy to Elway, then in his 15th season, “This one’s for John.” After the Super Bowl win 10 years ago, Bowlen was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, and Elway, then the general manager, declared with the trophy in his hand, “This one’s for Pat.” Bowlen died in 2019.

“It was very special for me to come back to Denver and be a part of a third world championship after being a part of a couple with Mike,” Kubiak said. “I think John (dedicating the win to Bowlen), with everything that Pat was battling then, and after Pat had passed it on to John, all those things, you look back at and add it up to some really special memories. I’m very fortunate we were able to get it done (in Super Bowl 50) and a lot of great people were a part of it.”

The 2015 regular season featured Manning missing six games due to a foot injury and being replaced by Brock Osweiler, who started the final seven. Manning then came on in the second half to lead the Broncos to a comeback win over the Chargers in the regular-season finale, and Kubiak named him the starter for the playoffs.

“I’ll talk about that on Wednesday,” Kubiak said.

Harris is looking forward to what everybody says on stage Wednesday.

“It’s great to be near your championship teammates,” Harris said. “We had the opportunity (last October), but we can’t get enough of them. It was a really special group, a really significant group.”

Briefly

The Broncos had an informal meeting at the NFL scouting combine in February with offensive lineman Trey Zuhn III, who starred at Fossil Ridge High School in Fort Collins and at Texas A&M. They followed that up with a recent draft Zoom interview with Zuhn, who played tackle and center in college and also could be used as a guard in the NFL. Zuhn is expected to be selected in the third or fourth round of the draft, which runs Thursday through Saturday. … With Broncos outside linebacker Dondrea Tillman having officially signed his one-year, $1.075 million exclusive rights tender Monday, their only player not to have signed such a tender is safety Devon Key. A source said he will sign after he arrives in Denver on April 30 in preparation for the May 4 start of offseason drills. Of the four to have been offered such deals, running back Tyler Badie and defensive lineman Jordan Jackson also already have signed.
