Nicolas Roy the hero as Avalanche win Game 2 over Kings in overtime

Sometimes, hockey truly is a beautiful game. Other times, it’s uglier than mud.

Game 2 of the Avalanche-Kings series was a whole lot of both.

Somehow the Avalanche came out on top and managed to fall in this one.

Nicolas Roy scored 7 minutes, 44 seconds, into overtime, giving the Avalanche the 2-1 victory and a 2-0 series lead.

The first 40 minutes of the game would be hard to show to anyone who wants to become a hockey fan. Endless penalties — some of which did not really look like penalties — gave the game zero flow. A questionable penalty shot delivered a great moment followed directly by a bizarre one.

Scott Wedgewood, making his second consecutive start, stopped Quinton Byfield on a penalty shot, diving to his left to make the save. Naturally, the fans were excited, but the fans behind Kings coach D.J. Smith got a little too hyped, pushing so hard that the glass in front of them shattered, sending the game to a screeching halt. It took 19 minutes for the ice crew to clean up the broken glass and replace it before the game returned to action.

The two teams finally played some real hockey in the third period.

A late penalty by Sam Malinski gave the Kings a power play, one they were able to take advantage of with an Artemi Panarin goal. Colorado was frustrated by the goal, as the Kings were able to secure an offensive zone faceoff because Josh Manson’s clear hit a linesman and went out of play. They felt the faceoff should have been in the neutral zone, but that did not end up being the case.

Just when it looked like the Kings might be tying this series up in regulation, the captain came to the rescue.

Devon Toews did a fantastic job of keeping the puck in at the offensive blue line, sending it back down low onto the stick of Martin Necas. Miraculously, Necas sent a pass through the legs of goaltender Anton Forsberg, right onto the stick of Gabriel Landeskog, who tied the game at 1-1 and almost blew the roof off the building with just under 4 minutes remaining in regulation.

Landeskog had another fantastic look with 2 minutes left that Forsberg was able to stop, sending the game to overtime.

In overtime, there was action at both ends, but it was ultimately Roy beating Forsberg on a rebound, outmuscling his man in front of the net to give the Avalanche the 2-0 series lead.

Game 3 is 8 p.m. Thursday in Los Angeles.
