Street improvements set to impact Colfax, downtown Denver traffic

Several street construction projects from Denver’s Department of Transportation and Infrastructure are set to impact traffic on east Colfax Avenue and areas of downtown Denver over the next week.

Paving operations will begin this week on East Colfax, which are expected to last until August. The goal is to create a smooth roadway from Broadway to Albion, according to a DOTI news release. Crews will first start on the segment between Sherman and Humboldt, and will use a mill to remove old asphalt and will then lay down a new surface.

This work is expected to last about three days for the section, weather permitting. Drivers will still have access to a travel lane during the project, though city officials said in a news release that traffic delays are still possible.

On Friday, work crews will replace a section of stormwater infrastructure at Colfax and Broadway. The work will begin at 7 p.m. and is expected to last until 5 a.m. Monday.

The work will require the closing of two eastbound lanes of Colfax Avenue, between Cherokee and Lincoln Streets, reducing that section of Colfax to one lane.

Two lanes of southbound Broadway will also be closed due to the work. The far right-hand lane will be closed for the whole weekend, while the far left-hand lane is expected to reopen midday Saturday.

Also starting on Friday is work in the area of Lincoln and Broadway near 20th Street. A DOTI contractor will be replacing concrete panels in that area, starting on Friday and ending next Thursday, April 30.

Drivers should plan for alternate routes or extra time to reach their destinations, as lane closures will happen on multiple streets, including two lanes on Lincoln Street approaching 20th Street and three lanes on 20th going between Lincoln and Broadway. Broadway north of and on approach to 20th will be down to one lane in each direction.
