No verdict in Sayers trial
The jurors deliberating the fate of a former Aurora anti-violence activist accused of murder did not agree on a verdict Friday after one day of deliberation.
Deliberations continue Monday at the Adams County Courthouse in Brighton.
Lumumba Sayers Sr., 47, faces charges of first-degree murder, two counts of felony menacing and two counts of tampering with evidence in connection with the shooting of Malcolm Watson on Aug. 10, 2024, at a public pool in Commerce City.
Prosecutors presented evidence during the two-week trial of Watson being gunned down at his son’s fifth birthday party outside of the public pool. Their theory is that Sayers allegedly killed Watson for revenge in his son’s 2023 murder in Denver.
Sayers Sr. allegedly walked up to the scene with a handgun and shot Watson multiple times in the head and body in front of Watson’s family and friends.
The defendant then walked back to his car, handed a package to his daughter and a man identified as “Rico,” according to testimony, and then walked back to Watson’s body with another handgun.
Video footage showed Sayers Sr. fumbling with Watson’s body, allegedly rubbing the unregistered handgun on Watson’s hands before placing it next to his body.
Sayers son Lumumba Sayers Jr. was shot and killed on Aug. 19, 2023, at 28th and Welton streets in Denver.
