Sonny Lubick leads CSU to first WAC title | Nov. 19, 1994 | Colorado’s Top 150 Sports Moments
Happy birthday, Colorado — and Colorado sports.
Leading into the state’s 150th birthday Aug. 1, The Denver Gazette has partnered with the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame to publicize the definitive list of Colorado’s top 150 sports moments.
Colorado Sports Hall of Fame historian Dave Plati and a committee of 10 compiled and will release the list every week until the No. 1 moment on July 31. Plati and Broncos icon Jim Saccomano will unveil the list weekly on a Colorado Sports Hall of Fame podcast at coloradosports.org/podcast/.

No. 72 — Nov. 19, 1994
Less than two years after hiring Sonny Lubick as the head football coach on Dec. 21, 1992, Colorado State earned its first Western Athletic Conference title since joining the league in 1968 with a 44-42 win at Fresno State. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 24-3 second-quarter lead, but three touchdown runs by E.J. Watson pulled CSU even in the third quarter. A 30-yard blocked punt return for a score by Raymond Jackson put the Rams ahead for good at 31-27. The No. 10 Rams improved to 10-1 with the win and were 7-1 in WAC play. CSU’s first league title since 1955 (Skyline) secured a Holiday Bowl berth opposite Michigan. Lubick was inducted into the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame in 2009.
