Westbound I-76 closed near Thornton after fatal crash

An early-Friday fatal crash left the westbound lanes of Interstate 76 closed for several hours.

The crash happened at about 6:10 a.m. Friday morning at milepost 6, near the Interstate 25 interchange, according to the Colorado State Patrol. Officers responded to reports of an auto-pedestrian crash.

Investigators determined a trash truck was traveling westbound on the interstate when it struck a pedestrian walking on the highway. The pedestrian, who was not identified, died at the scene.

Officials did not give an estimate for how long the westbound lanes would be closed as police investigate the crash. Traffic cameras showed heavy delays in the area, though the highway was later reopened.

Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to contact Colorado State Patrol dispatch at 303-239-4501 and reference 1D261510.
