Kickin’ It with Kiz: Did Broncos, Raiders or Chiefs find the steal at RB in draft?
I like the Broncos drafting defensive tackle Tyler Onyedim because he’s from the same place as where Super Bowl 50 MVP Von Miller played his college football.
– Robert, pit bull mentality
Kiz: While Onyedim will get a chance to fill the big roster hole left by the departure of John Franklin-Myers, it’s the Broncos’ selection of Jonah Coleman of Washington that intrigues me the most. His tackle-breaking and pass-blocking skills could make him viable injury insurance for J.K. Dobbins. But here’s where the plot of this story thickens. After Denver drafted Coleman at No. 108 overall, the Raiders took Arkansas running back Mike Washington Jr. at No. 122, while the Chiefs grabbed Nebraska running back Emmett Johnson at No. 161. Did any of these AFC West rivals get a steal at RB in the middle rounds?
Playoff hockey isn’t the same as the grind in the NHL’s regular season. There’s much tighter checking in the playoffs, so the Avs could lose for sure if they play Dallas or go to a Game 7 in any series.
– Kevin, Cup or bust
Kiz: While the L.A. Kings are no championship threat, they’ve been a useful warmup for the Avs to demonstrate they are truly comfortable winning tight-checking, 2-1 playoff games. Colorado has passed the test. So long as Scott Wedgewood shows no cracks in the wall guarding the goal, the Avalanche can beat anyone, whether the game is firewagon hockey or a mucking and grinding slog.
Get UConn’s Dan Hurley in here to coach the Nuggets, immediately!
– Will, Denver
Kiz: And some folks thought Michael Malone was too irascible? Hurley would chew every piece of furniture on the Nuggets bench. Even if he wanted to take his coaching talents to the NBA, here’s guessing Hurley’s asking price would be too steep for Stan and Josh Kroenke. The Kroenkes will gladly spend top dollar on players who score buckets and sell tickets. But spend big on a guy who scribbles X’s and O’s on the bench? Not so much.
Big changes need to be made with the Nuggets, because this team is simply not tough enough! Who cares about leading the NBA in scoring if an opponent can call you out as soft by name and you do nothing about it?
– M.P., Aurora
Kiz: Look for significant changes in the Nuggets roster, regardless of whether the team makes a deep playoff run or is eliminated early from the championship chase. Veterans Tim Hardaway Jr. and Bruce Brown, the two most reliable performers on Denver’s bench, both are working on one-year contracts at minimum NBA pay. Can’t see THJ returning to the Nuggets without a hefty raise. And will management find a creative way to keep Peyton Watson, whose breakout season was felled by injury, if he can find a salary of $15 million (and possibly much more) as a restricted free agent?
And today’s parting shot is a reminder: It doesn’t matter what folks say about you, as long as they get your name right.
It’s easy to be critical from the armchair. Try some positive thinking. Not one of you in the media can play basketball the way the Nuggets do. And Mike Kiszla is the most negative person ever.
