Armed suspect hospitalized after downtown Denver police shooting
Denver police officers shot and wounded an armed suspect early Sunday after responding to a reported shooting near 16th Street and California Avenue, police said.
Officers were dispatched to the area around 2 a.m. on a report of a shooting, Denver Police Chief Ron Thomas said. The suspect fled the scene and was chased into the vestibule of an apartment complex nearby.
When officers confronted the suspect, they identified that the individual was armed with a gun, Thomas said.
“He did not drop that gun, and put the officers in a position where they felt they were in danger,,” Thomas said during a Sunday news conference. “They ultimately discharged their duty handguns.”
The suspect was struck multiple times by gunfire. Officers rendered first aid before the individual was transported to a hospital, where the suspect is in stable condition.
Police said they have also located the victim from the initial shooting that prompted the response. That person was transported to the hospital and is also in stable condition.
Following the shooting, the Denver Police Department initiated its officer-involved shooting protocol. Investigators are conducting a joint investigation into the incident, which will be turned over to the district attorney’s office for review.
Authorities did not immediately release the suspect’s identity or details about the circumstances that led to the initial shooting.
The incident remains under investigation.
