State Forest State Park: A guide to visiting this massive 70,000-acre state park, known for wildlife and jagged peaks

As the state’s largest state park and often referred to as ‘Little Rocky Mountain National Park,’ State Forest State Park is known as the moose-viewing capital of Colorado, as it provides great opportunities to spot the animals, and other wildlife. The park consists of 70,932 acres of forest, jagged peaks, alpine lakes, and miles of trails.

History of the park:

North Michigan Reservoir was constructed in the mid-1960s by Colorado Game, Fish and Parks and opened as the North Michigan Reservoir Recreation Area with camping along the shores. The effort to create a new state park on the Colorado State Forest began with a tour of the area with legislators, stakeholders, and representatives with Colorado Game, Fish and Parks in 1965.

A lease was signed with the State Land Board to create State Forest State Park in 1972.

What recreation it’s known for:

Fishing and boating are popular activities at State Forest State Park. Wake-less boating and fishing are allowed at North Michigan Reservoir. Fishing is allowed at Ranger Lakes. Fishing is also allowed at The Alpine Lakes. Boating and swimming are not allowed at the Ranger Lakes and The Alpine Lakes.

Popular camping/lodging options:

State Forest State Park offers many campgrounds for tents and RVs that offer easy access to hiking, fishing, and more. The park also includes 13 rustic cabins and seven yurts, as well as two larger lodges at the North Michigan and North Park campgrounds.

Popular trails:

Lake Agnes Trail – 0.8 miles one way

Gould Loop Trail – 6.5 miles roundtrip

Ranger Lakes Nature Trial – 1.5 miles roundtrip

Diamond Peaks – 7 miles one way

Moose Creek Cafe – located in Gould, this is one of the closest spots for quick meals near the park entrance.

River Rock Cafe – this spot is located in Walden, which is about 30-40 minutes away, and is a great spot for American comfort food.
