Man charged with vehicular homicide was speeding before fatal Jefferson County crash

A man has been charged with speeding and driving recklessly before a Valentine’s Day crash in Jefferson County that left two people dead.

Damien Lee Sronce, 25, faces two counts of vehicular homicide reckless driving, and one count each of lack of compulsory insurance, speeding and reckless driving.

The crash happened at about 8 p.m. Feb. 14 at the intersection of West Colfax Avenue and Youngfield Street, according to a Colorado State Patrol arrest affidavit. A Mitsubishi Lancer was traveling westbound on Highway 40 when it collided with a Ford Escort turning left from eastbound Highway 40 onto Youngfield Street.

The passenger of the Escort, Rosemary Marcil, 78, was thrown from the car and killed. Her husband, driver Carl Marcil, also 78, died while en route to a hospital.

The couple, who lived in Arvada, were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash, the affidavit said. Police said the couple was returning home from a Valentine’s Day celebration.

Sronce told police he “zoned out” while driving and did not see the turning vehicle. Police wrote in the affidavit that Sronce showed no indication of drug or alcohol impairment, and his cell phone data did not show evidence that it was being used around the time of the crash.

However, an analysis of the Mitsubishi’s data showed that seconds prior to the crash, Sronce’s car was traveling 89 mph. The speed limit on the road is 45 mph.

Sronce and his passenger were not injured in the crash.

After an investigation by the CSP, Sronce was arrested on April 28. He has now been formally charged by the First Judicial District Attorney’s Office. He faces up to six years in prison on each of the most serious charges, vehicular homicide.

Sronce was released from the Jefferson County jail after posting a $100,000 bond, officials said. He’s due back in court for a preliminary hearing June 4.

Carl Joseph Marcil was born in Grand Junction, according to the couple’s obituary that ran in The Denver Gazette. Rosemary Ann Marcil was born in Denver.
