Fatal multi-vehicle crash that resulted in extended I-25 closure caused by SUV traveling in reverse
Colorado State Patrol has released some of the findings related to their ongoing investigation into a fatal multi-vehicle crash that resulted in a significant closure of northbound I-25 near Castle Pines on Friday, May 15.
According to an update released the following Monday, signs point to the crash being the result of a vehicle backing up on the right northbound shoulder. Per that report, the Chevrolet Equinox was traveling in reverse when it drifted into the right lane of the road. At this time, an Audi Q5 struck the back of the Equinox and then a Toyota Highland struck the Audi. The Equinox was pushed into the shoulder, but both the Audi and Toyota came to rest in the roadway, blocking travel.
With the crash occurring around 1:23 p.m., the road wasn’t reopened until 5:12 p.m., causing significant traffic disruptions amid the Friday evening commute.
The driver of the Chevrolet Equinox, a 31-year-old male from Aurora, was pronounced deceased at the scene with both other drivers who were involved in the crash transported to the hospital with injuries. The Audi was driven by a 46-year-old female from Parker, who sustained serious injuries. Meanwhile, the Toyota was driven by a 58-year-old female from Castle Pines, who sustained moderate injuries.
At this time, the Colorado State Patrol Vehicular Crimes Unit continues to investigate the crash and is still looking for potential witnesses who have not yet spoken to investigators.
