Pikes Peak International Raceway, a fixture in the area for nearly 30 years, announced it will be closing following the 2026 season.

The raceway announced Tuesday evening via social media that the property will be targeted for mixed-use development, with more information expected later next year.

“This isn’t goodbye just yet,” the post read. “We still have the 2026 season to celebrate everything PPIR has meant to this community, and we hope you’ll join us as we make these final laps together.”

The 1-mile oval hosted its first race June 8, 1997, drawing 16,810 spectators.

The facility, which at its peak had a max capacity of 40,000, hosted Honda Indy of the IndyCar Series from 1997-2005 and a NASCAR Busch Series event from 1998-2005. NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series also made a regular stop at the track, located south of Colorado Springs just to the west of Interstate 25, from 1998-2002.

The record crowd came for the inaugural Indy Racing League Samsonite 200 on June 29, 1997, when an estimated 38,100 fans filed into the facility.

Large-scale events have been absent from the raceway for more than 20 years.

The PPIR website lists 26 events remaining on the calendar from this weekend (Slush Motorsports Festival) through the final scheduled event Oct. 18 (Ladies Drift Day).

“PPIR has been more than just a racetrack — it has been a home for racers, riders, teams, families, fans and automotive enthusiasts from across Colorado and beyond,” the raceway wrote on the post. “From grassroots motorsports events and festivals to track days, drift nights, drag racing, and unforgettable memories made in the paddock, PPIR has been shaped by the incredible community that supported us year after year.”
