Golden Gate State Park: A stunning escape into nature near Denver

Located within an hour’s drive of the Denver metro area, Golden Gate Canyon State Park is known for its expansive views of the Continental Divide from Panorama Point. The park is also known for having over 35 miles of trails that provide access to “high mountain meadows, lush streamside corridors, rocky peaks and dense forest.”

History of the park:

Golden Gate Canyon State Park’s first inhabitants were big-game hunters around 12,000 to 7,500 years ago that hunted mammoth and bison. Later, they shifted to elk, deer, small game, and native nuts and berries. Tribal groups including the Ute, Cheyenne, Apache, Comanche, Kiowa, and Arapaho lived in the area about 400 years ago.

The gold rush attracted settlers in 1859. Families homesteaded in the area, growing crops and raising cattle. The area became known as the state park it is today.

What recreation it’s known for:

Golden Gate Canyon State Park is known for its hiking trails. The park includes over 35 miles of trails. Each is named after an animal and the trails are open for hiking year-round.

Popular camping/lodging options:

Golden Gate Canyon State Park has plenty of overnight accommodations. The park features 156 campsites, including tent and RV sites at the Reverend’s Ridge Campground to rustic backcountry sites with no amenities.

Blue Grouse Trail – 0.8 miles one way

Buffalo Trail – 1.2 miles one way

Beaver Trail – 2.3 mile loop

Black Bear Trail – 2.5 miles one way

Other things to know:

Golden Gate Canyon is home to a lot of different animals including moose, bighorn sheep, black bear, mule deer, elk, snowshoe hare, coyote, bobcat, beaver, weasel, marten, fox, marmot, and porcupine. Make sure to know what to do if you encounter at animal. Dogs also must be kept on a six-foot or shorter hand-held leash.
