Boy dies after falling into Fort Collins irrigation ditch

A boy died after falling into an irrigation ditch in Fort Collins Tuesday evening, the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office said.

Authorities were called to the 3100 block of N County Road 19 just before 6 p.m. Tuesday to a report of a child falling into an active irrigation ditch, which is fed by the Cache la Poudre River and runs behind homes in the area, according to a Wednesday news release from the office.

A neighbor found the child downstream and began performing CPR before the boy was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to the release.

“This is a really tough one. Sudden loss is never easy, but losing a child is especially hard,” said Larimer County Undersheriff Joe Shellhammer in the release. “Our hearts are heavy today for this family and everyone who knew this little boy.”

The incident was the second along the Front Range involving a child who died in a waterway Tuesday night. About 35 miles south, a 4-year-old boy was pulled from St. Vrain Creek, about 1.5 miles from the campsite where he went into the water, according to our news partner 9NEWS.

Investigators are working to determine exactly how the Fort Collins child fell into the ditch and are providing resources to his family and neighbors. The Larimer County Coroner will release the child’s name, as well as the cause and manner of his death, at a later time.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact investigator Marcus Simelane at 970-498-5515.
