Man hospitalized after getting “stomped” by elk at front door
An elk attack resulted in a man getting hospitalized in Estes Park over the weekend.
According to 9NEWS, the attack took place on Saturday in the area of an apartment complex on Manford Avenue. The attack followed multiple reports of a cow elk that was exhibiting aggressive behavior in the area. At this time, elk calving season has reached its peak in northern Colorado, which can result in mother elk being more protective of their young.
Per KDVR, the man was attacked “just outside his front door.” The elk reportedly “stomped” on the man with his condition unknown at last report, though he was taken to the hospital due to injuries he sustained.
Following the attack, the cow elk and her calf moved to a more secluded area. Signs were posted to warn others about the potential of aggressive elk near the apartment complex.
While it’s always important to keep your distance from wildlife, extra distance may be needed when its calving season. Attacks of this nature are unfortunately expected each year, and while they can occur when an animal is surprised on the trail, they can also occur in a situation when an animal is seemingly used to life in a more civilized area. Observe big game wildlife from afar and if you notice potential signs of aggression, creating a safe separation is a good first step. A general rule of thumb is to watch for an animal altering its behavior, as that’s usually an initial sign that you’re too close. Another tactic for determining if you’re too close is to hold a thumb up on an outstretched arm and try to cover the entire animal. If you’re unable to, you’re too close.
