Wildland fire that started in apartment complex results in presumed “total loss” of 8-unit building

A scary situation unfolded in Rifle, Colorado on June 10 when what was initially reported as a backyard fire ended up destroying an apartment building before spreading to surrounding wildland terrain.

According to a report from Colorado River Fire Rescue, they responded to the structure fire at about 4:01 p.m. amid strong winds. With heavy fuel in the surrounding area, the fire quickly spread from the structure to burn along Government Creek. A KDVR report indicated that by 7:45 p.m., the fire reached 3 acres in size.

Due to the dangerous fire conditions, evacuations were ordered for residents along Willow Creek Circle and west 30th Street with the Garfield County Fairgrounds serving as a temporary spot for those who were displaced to go.

The firefighting operation was ultimately successful, but not before the fire spread to the roof of an eight-unit apartment building resulting in significant damage and what’s believed to be a total loss. One dog was saved from the building by firefighting personnel.

Per a report last night, crews remained on the scene to continue work on containment, extinguishing hot spots and assessing damage. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

“Yesterday, our community witnessed firsthand the courage, skill, and unwavering dedication of the men and women who answer the call when disaster strikes,” wrote the Rifle Police Department about the incident. “As a fast-moving fire burned through an area in North Rifle, Colorado River Fire Rescue was on scene immediately. Faced with extreme winds and rapidly changing conditions, their firefighters adapted without hesitation—seamlessly pivoting equipment, tactics, and strategy to meet the moment.”

No injuries related to the fire have been reported thus far.
