Crash on I-70 involving e-bike sends one to hospital in Denver area
According to the Denver Police Department, their agency is investigating a crash involving a motorist and an e-bike that took place in the area of eastbound I-70 and Steele Street on June 11.
Images from the scene that were published by KDVR show traffic on I-70 being impacted with several lanes closed. Damage on the passenger side of a small SUV can be seen, including damage on paneling by the front right tire and damage on the passenger side of the windshield. Meanwhile, the e-bike involved in the crash appears to have sustained significant damage, as well, with the front wheel separated from the bike.
Following the crash, one person was transported to the hospital. The initial report from the Denver Police Department did not indicate which party that was.
The same collection of images also shows that the e-bike involved in the crash does have pedals. This is worth noting, as it indicates it is not one of the electric motos that tend to get mistaken for pedal e-bikes and have been a hot topic of discussion in Colorado in recent weeks and months amid widespread reports of speeding and reckless riding.
While many e-motos can hit speeds above 40 miles per hour, the fastest that e-bikes with pedals are supposed to be able to go in Colorado is 28 miles per hour. Obviously, there’s a major speed gap between that and what vehicles travel at on I-70.
While e-biking is legal on some highways, in most urban areas, taking an e-bike on I-25 or I-70 is not.
