Denver golfers sure could use some relief from expensive greens fees | The Starting Lineup

Turn on the game!

Three must-see events this week:

1. Carolina at Vegas (6 p.m. Sunday, ABC) — Game 6 of the Stanley Cup final has the Hurricanes, who hold a 3-2 series lead, on the brink of their first championship since 2006.

2. Rockies at Chicago Cubs (6:05 p.m. Monday, MLB.tv) — Stay with The Denver Gazette as Kevin Henry reports from Game 1 of a three-game set in the friendly confines of Wrigley Field.

3. United States Men’s National Team vs. Australia (1 p.m. Friday, Fox) — Talk about a grand entrance for the USMNT, which put the World Cup on notice with a spectacular 4-1 rout of Paraguay in its opener.

Numbers game

11.26 — seconds, the time it took Rockies rookie Cole Carrigg to sprint from home plate to third base on his first MLB hit, a triple, the 12th-fastest time in baseball this season, according to the excellent Thomas Harding of MLB.com

Box office

$270 — for 2026 Colorado State football season tickets, which went on sale last week, in the lower-bowl Section LL at Canvas Stadium (csurams.com)

On this day

June 14, 1993 — Rockies first baseman Andres Galarraga, the eventual NL batting champ, lifted his average to .425 by going 4-for-4 with a double and home run in a 9-4 loss to the Dodgers at Mile High Stadium

Final word

Tickets for the Knicks’ Game 4 started at $5,000. The get-in price for the USMNT vs. Paraguay was right around $1,000. Goodness gracious! Sports are pricing out the people. But what’s really jarring is the price of a round of golf. My buddy Sid turns 9 in July and has PGA Tour written all over his left-handed swing. Do you know what it cost Mom and Grandpa for range balls, 18 holes and a cart at a City of Denver course? Almost $250. That kind of entry cost puts serious limits on who can and can’t play the best game.
