32-year-old found dead on 14,155-foot Mount Sneffels in Colorado
A 32-year-old man died on a 14,155-foot Colorado peak in recent days, prompting a traumatic death investigation.
According to the Ouray County Coroner, the body of 32-year-old Bret Brachman-Goldstein, of Montrose, was found in the area of Mount Sneffels on June 11. It is believed that Brachman-Goldstein died the previous day, on June 10.
Per the coroner, the cause and manner of Brachman-Goldstein’s death are still pending autopsy and toxicology results. This process was described by the coroner as “standard practice in traumatic death investigations.”
According to a report from the Ouray County Plaindealer, investigators believe Brachman-Goldstein was running on the peak before he “fell down on scree.” Hikers reportedly found his body the next day.
Mount Sneffels is a popular peak for outdoor recreation in southwest Colorado’s San Juan mountain range, with all summit-bound routes rated as at least ‘Class 3’ due to exposure and other risks. Its summit is located about four miles north of Telluride.
Multiple groups were involved in the response to the discovery of Brachman-Goldstein’s body, including the Ouray County Sheriff’s Office, Ouray Mountain Rescue Team, and the Ouray County Coroner’s Office.
