Well-known BASE jumper known for daring stunts and close calls dead in Moab incident

A 39-year-old extreme sports athlete and social media personality died in a Moab BASE jumping incident on June 14.

According to the Grand County Sheriff’s Office (of Utah), the fatal BASE jumping incident took place in the remote area of Mineral Bottom near Moab. Two people were pronounced deceased as a result of the incident, including a man estimated to be around 50 years old and 39-year-old Andrew Lewis, better known by his online persona – Sketchy Andy Lewis.

The owner of BASE Jump Moab, Lewis had a storied career as an extreme sports athlete that included performing on a trickline alongside Madonna at Super Bowl XLVI, being the first person to land a backflip on a slackline, and setting a previous record for the longest unprotected highline crossing at 180 feet. Most recently, he became known online for his many BASE jumps and a giant canyon swing, and for helping others experience both of those activities for the first time. A video from earlier this month that ended up with 5.2 million views on Instagram and counting shows a four-year-old on the canyon swing, with the swing known for attracting thrill-seekers to the Moab area from around the globe.

Lewis’ company BASE Jump Moab is known for making the highly technical and extremely dangerous sport of BASE jumping more accessible to the public, offering $750 tandem BASE jumps per their website.

BASE jumping is a form of skydiving that involves jumping from a building, antenna, span, or Earth (hence the ‘B.A.S.E.’ acronym). It’s considered much more dangerous than skydiving from a plane as the shorter distance to the ground means almost no time to find a solution should anything go wrong.

Lewis’ social media clips put this risk on display, as several of his videos capture ‘close call’ scenarios. One particular move that he was perhaps known for included BASE jumping to the top of another rock formation opposed to landing on the ground, as seen here.

Since Lewis’ death, there’s been an outpour of mourning and support from his loved ones and online followers. He’s sure to be missed in the extreme sports community and beyond.

At this time, few details have been released through official sources about the fatal BASE jumping incident that killed Lewis and another man. Condolences go out to the loved ones of both people killed in that incident.
