Fans flock to Skyline Park for World Cup watch party

“USA” chants resounded through Denver’s Skyline Park on 16th Street as fans stormed a downtown World Cup watch party.

Soccer fans on Friday packed into the park for the U.S. vs. Australia game, making up a watch party hosted by the Colorado Rapids. The line to get in was long, as fans were only allowed in after others had left once it reached capacity.

The game lit up the big screen as fans watched attentively from the turf as the U.S. got its second win in this year’s World Cup.

The park offered a variety of seating, including covered tables, lawn chairs and a large yard fit for picnic blankets. Despite this, fans stood in excitement.

The crowd moved in blurs of red, white and blue, while U.S. and Australia fans alike rooted for their teams below the skyscrapers.

“We came out today because we thought it would be a great place to watch the game in our city,” one spirited couple said.

Patriotic fans sported American flags in their hands, on their hats and wore them as capes. An air of community and connection permeated the park, as residents and travelers alike cheered together.

Flags from every country participating in this year’s World Cup hung from banners above the park.

Skyline featured activities for everyone, including raffles, yard games and food vendors.

Entry for Skyline’s watch parties is free, though it is required to reserve a spot online. Other free amenities include sunscreen stations, cool-down stations and photo ops.
