Man arrested in connection with shooting near City Park

Denver police on Friday announced that a man had been arrested in connection with a shooting earlier this month.

Joseph Michael Eugene York, 35, was booked into the Denver city jail on Thursday, according to jail records. Police said he faces a charge of first-degree murder in connection with a June 7 shooting near City Park.

That shooting, which took place at about 3:30 a.m. near East Colfax Avenue and North Dahlia Street, left Elijah Barr, 25, dead, according to the Denver Medical Examiner’s office. He was transported to the hospital by a private vehicle, where he died at about 4:40 a.m.

According to York’s arrest affidavit, the shooting happened after an argument between York’s group and Barr’s group during a night out. A witness told police she saw York pull out a gun and fire it into the air before shooting Barr, who the witness said was not participating in the argument and was on his phone.

After York allegedly fired into the air, Barr’s group scattered and York then fired upon the group. Barr was on the ground when York is alleged to have shot him, according to the witness.

Police were able to identify York as the possible shooter after viewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses. York’s phone records were also pulled during the investigation, which showed he was in the area at the time of the shooting.

York also faces a charge of second-degree burglary, according to jail records.
