Rockies’ crowded outfield will lead to tough roster decisions

Over the next two to three weeks, the Colorado Rockies will face a big decision: What will they do with an overcrowded outfield?

Consider the options.

Mickey Moniak is currently on a rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Albuquerque, and all signs are pointing to the outfielder being activated in time for Colorado’s three-game home series against the Boston Red Sox on Monday. When the 28-year-old Moniak returns, president of baseball operations Paul DePodesta will have to make a roster move to accommodate Moniak’s return to the lineup.

“Today (Saturday) should be his last game and then we’ll see where he is at,” Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer said before the Rockies and Pirates met on Saturday night at 20th and Blake.

Two other injured outfielders — Jordan Beck and Brenton Doyle — participated in live batting practice at Coors Field on Saturday afternoon, another step in their quest to return to the Rockies roster.

Both are expected to head out on minor-league rehab assignments soon, meaning their potential returns to the lineup could be within the next couple of weeks.

“They’re getting close, which is great news,” Schaeffer said. “Both of those guys, I think over the next five or six days will determine when to send them out.”

Schaeffer went on to say that the return of Beck and Doyle was “a little ways away.”

Still, regardless of the timing, there are already thoughts churning about what could happen when Colorado’s outfield returns to full strength for the first time since Beck was placed on the Injured List on May 18 with a left hamstring strain. Two days later, Doyle went out with a left oblique contusion and, two days after that, Moniak was lost to right ankle tendonitis.

Just as quickly as the Rockies lost their three outfielders, however, the trio could be coming back in succession before Independence Day.

Sterlin Thompson (who debuted on May 15 after Beck’s injury) and Cole Carrigg (who debuted on June 9) have both received significant playing time in the outfield since their respective call-ups. Carrigg has been especially effective in center field, a premium position for the Rockies, given the large outfield gaps they must cover in Denver.

Thompson could be a roster casualty when Moniak returns as Carrigg’s defense in center is making him invaluable at the moment. Add to that the potential for Carrigg to also play shortstop if needed, and it’s clear why the Rockies value what he brings to the big-league roster.

That could be the first Rockies move, but what happens with the returns of Doyle and Beck could be even more interesting.

Both had settled into platoon roles when their injuries occurred. Beck posted a .183 overall average in 82 at-bats before being shelved. However, he was hitting .316 in 38 at-bats against left-handed pitchers versus .068 in 44 at-bats against righties.

Doyle, meanwhile, was batting .207 overall in his first 111 at-bats of the season. Most of Doyle’s at-bats had come against righties (73 at-bats with a .205 average) versus lefties (38 at-bats with a .211 average).

With Carrigg now in the picture, Moniak returning, and Jake McCarthy, Tyler Freeman, Willi Castro, and Troy Johnston able to play in the outfield as well, the situation awaiting Beck and Doyle’s return is different from the one they left in mid-May. Doyle’s defense is still needed in center field, but Carrigg has shown he can play the position.

But there are more potential outfielders. While the corner outfielder spots are jammed with options at the MLB level, prospects Zac Veen and Charlie Condon are at Triple-A as potential help if called upon … and both have been solid over the last month.

So how will the Rockies handle the crowded outfield?

Here’s a potential scenario: Moniak and Doyle return to the Colorado roster with Thompson and catcher Braxton Fulford sent back to Triple-A. Beck finishes his rehab assignment with Albuquerque and stays with the Isotopes until he is no longer limited to being a platoon bat.

And be warned: Colorado’s outfield could change again at the MLB trade deadline on Aug. 3 if Moniak or Doyle are moved.

What once looked like a position group depleted by injuries could soon become one of the most intriguing roster puzzles the Rockies must solve. How the Rockies distribute playing time — and whether they view some of those players as long-term pieces or trade assets — could provide an early glimpse into how the organization plans to shape its roster beyond 2026.

Rockies 2, Pirates 1

What happened: After a leadoff home run from Spencer Horwitz, Colorado held Pittsburgh scoreless for the rest of the contest in a pitchers’ duel at Coors Field, handing Paul Skenes his seventh loss of the season. Jaden Hill earned the save by working out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth to help move the Rockies to 30-47 on the season.

On the mound: Tomoyuki Sugano had one of his best games with Colorado, allowing just four hits over his six innings on the mound while striking out five. He also didn’t allow a walk for the second time this season. He retired the final 12 batters he faced.

At the plate: Jake McCarthy led off for the Rockies with an inside-the-park home run. His inside-the-park homer was the 20th in franchise history and the first since Ian Desmond on June 14, 2019, against San Diego. It was the second leadoff inside-the-park home run in franchise history, joining Eric Young Jr. on Aug. 8, 2012, at Dodger Stadium.

What’s next: Colorado concludes its series with Pittsburgh on Sunday at 1:10 p.m. Michael Lorenzen (2-8, 7.13 ERA) will take the mound for the Rockies against Pittsburgh’s Jared Jones (1-1, 6.23 ERA).
