Ellie Caulkins Opera House to receive new seats

Every patron of Denver’s Ellie Caulkins Opera House is getting a better seat.

As part of a larger maintenance project, the opera house is getting modernized seating this summer.

After a $92 million renovation in the early 2000s, the Ellie Caulkins Opera House has functioned as the premier opera venue in the state.

This summer, the venue is upholding its status by undergoing several improvements.

Most notably, the original seating is being replaced. The 20-year-old seats, featuring a seat back titling system, are being swapped “with brand-new seats designed to improve comfort, reduce noise and enhance the audience experience for years to come,” Opera Colorado said in a news release.

To the dismay of some theatergoers, “the current seat back titling system will also be retired, as it is no longer supported by the manufacturer,” venue officials said.

In place of this system, one that provided translated captioning for shows, Denver Arts & Venues is exploring alternate options. Their top priorities are functionality and visibility for every seat.

The organization is asking for feedback to develop the best captioning possible.

The new seats will be in place for the 2026 season, starting Nov. 7 with “Macbeth.”
