One of best places in U.S. to ‘camp by water’ is located in Colorado, says The Dyrt
In case you haven’t heard, The Dyrt is a great resource when it comes to camping, with the company featuring detailed profiles and reviews of campsites around the country. Periodically, the company will highlight some of the ‘best-of-the-best’ based on certain features, and recently, the topic of discussion was the ‘best places to camp near water.’ Colorado might be a landlocked state, but that doesn’t mean there’s a shortage of places with an aquatic view. This makes it no surprise that a Colorado spot made the cut to be included among The Dyrt’s ‘top 10 camping near water’ picks.
Ranking eighth overall was Colorado’s Prospector Campground, which is located in Summit County, overlooking Dillon Reservoir with a mountain-view backdrop.
At about 9,000 feet of elevation in White River National Forest, this campground is spread across multiple loops with nearly all sites offering a stunning view of the lake below. Plus, it’s also close to a trail that leads to Dillon Reservoir’s shoreline – perfect for fishing and paddleboarders, as well as hikers seeking to access a trail that loops around the lake.
Per The Dyrt, Prospector Campground has 105 sites, with RVs, pets, and fires allowed (when there’s no fire ban in place). Another great benefit of this campground is that it’s a pretty short drive from spots like Keystone, Breckenridge, Frisco, Dillon, and Silverthorne.
Prospector Campground has a 4.5-star rating on The Dyrt’s website, with reviewers praising its scenic nature, clean facilities, well-spaced sites, and easy access to local towns. The only downside that gets mentioned is the potential for crowding – after all, it is very popular given how great it is.
Visitors report that a campsite fee is around $27, but expect a small reservation fee, as well. It’s also worth noting that throughout this summer (and maybe longer amid dry conditions statewide), water won’t be available for campers at Prospector Campground (along with other campgrounds in the area). Campers will need to bring their own (read more about that situation and find a few recommendations here).
Nationwide, the top campground for ‘camping near water’ was said to be Jenny Lake Campground in Wyoming’s Grand Teton National Park.
