Arapahoe Sheriff’s deputies shoot, kill pole-wielding man in Centennial

Two Arapahoe County Sheriff’s deputies shot and killed a man they say was wielding a metal pole after the man struck an officer with the pole.

The shooting happened around 6:10 a.m. Saturday in the 4700 block of East Caley Place in Centennial, police said. Officers received a report of a suspicious individual in a backyard.

Upon arrival, deputies encountered a man holding a large metal pole. Police said the man advanced toward the officers and struck one of them with the pole.

Officers attempted less-lethal force, including a Taser, which was unsuccessful. Two deputies opened fire and struck the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The deputy who was struck suffered minor injuries.

The incident remains under investigation, police said. As per agency protocol, the two involved deputies, a six-year veteran and 14-year veteran, have been placed on administrative leave.

The 18th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team responded to the scene and is investigating, per police.

The man’s identity will be released by the Arapahoe County coroner pending next of kin notification.
