Bishop Castle has canceled the inaugural Bishop Castle Medieval Fair, scheduled for Aug. 7-9, 2026, after Daniel Bishop, the castle’s caretaker, was seriously injured while working on a structure next to the castle earlier this week.

In a Facebook post from Bishop Castle, it was announced that Daniel Bishop, the son of Jim Bishop and caretaker of Bishop Castle, suffered multiple broken bones and is looking at several weeks of recovery after having an accident while working on a structure next to the castle.

The post said that Bishop Castle is unable to host the event under these circumstances.

According to Bishop Castle, the festival was planned as a fundraiser for the Foundation for Newborn Heart Surgery. Even though the event is canceled, the post said that “the need to support this important cause remains.” Donations are still appreciated, and the castle says that any donations should include a note that they are for the charity.

“We sincerely appreciate everyone’s understanding, support, and prayers for Daniel and the entire Bishop family during this difficult time,” the post reads. “We hope to revisit the idea of hosting the Medieval Fair in the future.”

Located in Rye, Bishop Castle is reportedly the world’s largest one-man project. From 1969 to 2019, Jim Bishop built the castle one piece at a time. Jim passed away on Nov. 21, 2024. His son, Daniel, has been the castle caretaker since about 2018, when his mother passed away and his father’s health declined. According to Bishop Castle’s website, Daniel plans to “keep his father’s legacy alive.”
