Avalanche open development camp with top prospects absent, sign Taylor Makar to two-year contract

The Avalanche released their development camp roster Sunday. The first thing that popped out wasn’t who will be there, but who won’t be there.

When the prospects hit the ice Tuesday at Family Sports Center, fans in attendance will not see top prospects Ilya Nabokov, Mikhail Gulyayev, T.J. Hughes or Egor Shilov. Instead, it will be a mix of players who would be considered long shots, with a pair of third-round selections being the highest-drafted players at the camp.

Nabokov, Colorado’s top prospect, will begin his North American career next season, but his absence isn’t surprising. Most players with several years of professional hockey experience, whether overseas or in North America, skip the camp, and Nabokov just spent a month with the Colorado Eagles coaching staff. Hughes just had a long playoff run in the American Hockey League and there are no other Eagles regulars scheduled to be at camp.

Gulyayev hasn’t attended since his draft year. Considering he signed a two-year contract extension in Russia, it’s unknown when he’ll set foot on North American ice again. Shilov was Colorado’s top pick last weekend and was not present at the draft, so it’s unlikely he’s in the country or able to get there in time.

While none of the top prospects for the Avalanche will be present, here are a few names to watch at development camp:

Francesco Dell’elce, defenseman

Colorado’s top selection last summer in the third round, Dell’elce stagnated in his sophomore year at UMass, posting similar numbers to his freshman season. Built like your prototypical Avalanche defenseman with the skating ability they love, Dell’elce will need to take a step forward in the NCAA next season if he wants to earn a professional contract.

Nikita Novosyolov, goaltender

Nabokov won’t be there, but another Russian goaltender will be. The Avalanche signed Novosyolov this summer to an entry-level contract, meaning he should play in North America, but he’s a relative unknown. Undrafted, the 22-year-old put up impressive numbers in Russia’s minor league system and, at 6-foot-2, has the size you look for in net.

Beckett Hamilton, forward

With Shilov absent, Hamilton now becomes the highest-drafted player present at the camp by the Avalanche, taken 74th overall last weekend. Scouting report says the 18-year-old center has a high motor with some offensive skill to go with it.

Development camp schedule

The three on-ice days run from Tuesday-Thursday, are open to the public and will take place at Family Sports Center in Centennial.

Tuesday: 8:15-11:30 a.m.

Wednesday: 8:15-11:30 a.m.

Thursday: 9-11 a.m.

News and notes

  • The Avalanche announced they signed forward Taylor Makar to a two-year contract extension Monday. The 25-year-old winger had a strong season with the Eagles, posting 24 points in 52 games. If everything goes according to plan, Taylor will not be the only Makar signing on the dotted line with the Avalanche this summer, as the organization plans to extend Cale some time after July 1. Taylor will compete for an NHL spot at training camp as the Avalanche are likely to start the season with some younger players in the lineup.
