Denver Nuggets lose Tim Hardaway Jr. to Miami Heat
The new-look Heat added a much-needed sharpshooter around Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo.
After a standout season with the Nuggets, Tim Hardaway Jr. agreed to join Miami in the first hour of free agency, according to multiple reports. He’s set to make $6.5 million next season in Miami. Denver was limited to offering Hardaway $4.3 million next season unless they used the taxpayer, mid-level exception. Doing that would cap Denver at the second apron and make retaining Peyton Watson, a priority, even more complicated.
Hardaway played in 80 of Denver’s 82 regular-season games and appeared in all six playoff games. He averaged 13.5 points, shot a career-best 40.7% from 3-point range and finished third in the Sixth Man of the Year race in his lone season with the Nuggets.
Hardaway’s father, Tim Sr., played for the Heat from 1995 to 2001, and Tim Jr. attended Miami Palmetto High School.
The 34-year-old signed a veteran minimum contract to join Denver last summer, which limited the cash-strapped Nuggets in what they could offer him to return next season.
