Nuggets sign Tyus Jones, Marvin Bagley III to one-year contracts
The Nuggets addressed a couple of needs in the free agent market Wednesday and Thursday.
After Marvin Bagley III agreed to sign a one-year deal with Denver late Wednesday night, the Nuggets inked Tyus Jones on Thursday afternoon. Both players reportedly signed one-year deals.
Jones joined the Nuggets in March after being waived by Dallas. He only played in 11 regular-season games for Denver, averaging 2.2 points, 1.3 rebounds and 1.2 assists, but carved out a role in David Adelman’s rotation over the course of the first-round series against the Timberwolves. The 30-year-old point guard played ahead of Jalen Pickett, who did not have his team option picked up earlier this week.
Without Pickett, the Nuggets had a need for supplementary ball handlers.

Denver also had a need at reserve center. Jonas Valanciunas operated as Nikola Jokic’s primary backup for most of last season to mixed results. Valanciunas is reportedly considering offers to continue his career in Europe, leaving the Nuggets with a hole to fill behind Jokic. Denver is expected to waive the Lithuanian if they can’t find a trade partner in the coming days.
Bagley, an athletic big standing 6-foot-10, was Sacramento’s selection with the second pick of the 2018 draft and has bounced around the league since. He last played for the Mavericks, averaging 11 points and 6.8 rebounds across 22 games.
If Denver does waive Valanciunas, the Nuggets will have 10 of 15 standard roster spots occupied. That doesn’t include restricted free agent Peyton Watson or Trevon Brazile and Bryce Hopkins, who are not guaranteed standard roster spots as second-round picks.
