Two people drown as holiday weekend begins
A man drowned in Chatfield Reservoir Thursday evening after he jumped into the water to assist children. Then, on Friday afternoon, a second man drown at Cherry Creek State Park.
In the Thursday incident, multiple agencies searched for the man missing after an inner tube with three children in it capsized. The man’s body was recovered early Friday afternoon.
The children were saved with the help of family members and nearby boaters, but the man, identified by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s office as William Macaluso, 48, went under and did not resurface.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife said Macaluso jumped into the water to help the children when they started struggling after the tube capsized. Police described Macaluso as an experienced swimmer and said he was not wearing a lifejacket at the time of the incident.
South Metro Fire, West Metro Fire and Colorado Parks & Wildlife officers had rescue boats and divers in the water. Macaluso was reported missing around 5:45 p.m. Around 7:30 p.m., officials said their mission had transitioned from rescue to recovery. The search was called off at about 9 p.m. after it got too dark and resumed Friday morning.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s office said that Macaluso’s body was recovered shortly after noon on Friday. The incident remains under investigation.
On Friday afternoon, a man and a child fell into the water while on a paddleboard, Parks and Wildlife reported. The child made it to shore, but the man did not.
The South Metro Fire Rescue Dive Team pulled the man from the water and gave him CPR, but he was declared dead at a hospital, officials said in a news release.
