Mandatory evacuations expand overnight as Aspen Acres fire grows to nearly 74,000 acres

The latest estimate for the Aspen Acres Fire on Friday afternoon show it has grown to roughly 74,000 acres.

Mandatory evacuation orders for the Aspen Acres fire expanded around 12:30 a.m. Friday, according to the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office.

The expanded order includes all of Colorado City. Existing mandatory evacuation orders for surrounding communities remain in effect. In addition, Fremont County has issued a pre-evacuation notice for locations south of Florence.

According to an 8 a.m. update from the Alaska Complex Incident Management Team, the fire exhibited extreme fire behavior overnight, growing by about 11,000 acres.

“Pushed by strong overnight winds, the fire made an eight-mile run to the south, a four- to five-mile run to the north and grew one mile to the west,” the update said.

The fire grew by roughly 7,000 more acres during the day Friday, making it the eighth-largest fire in state history.

An evacuation shelter is open at 1650 Cooper Place.

The sheriff’s office said the fire is burning about 20 miles from Pueblo and that there is “no threat to Pueblo at this time.”
