Thornton police are investigating a homicide after a man was fatally shot during a party early Sunday morning in the 3600 block of East 91st Avenue.

Officers were dispatched to the area shortly before 1:45 a.m. Sunday after receiving a report that someone had been shot and that the suspect had fled the scene, according to the Thornton Police Department.

When officers arrived, they found a party taking place at the residence. A 44-year-old man was discovered outside the home suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Officers provided medical aid until emergency personnel arrived.

The man was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Authorities are withholding the victim’s identity pending positive identification by the Adams County Coroner’s Office and notification of next of kin.

Investigators are working to determine what led to the shooting and are attempting to gather information about the suspect.

Police said the investigation remains active and ongoing.
