Broncos enhanced transit plan delayed to 2027 after years without dedicated game-day buses
The Regional Transportation District will not offer enhanced high-volume service for the 2026 Denver Broncos season. The agency is instead reevaluating a service plan during the 2027 season after determining further adjustments are needed.
Just last month, the RTD Board of Directors approved a service plan that would support the addition of more than 10,000 seats aboard transit vehicles for Broncos game days. The plan was originally slated to commence in August at Empower Field at Mile High.
“The Broncos have a long-standing partnership with RTD, and we look forward to collaborating on transit options to our stadium for the 2027 season and beyond,” Broncos President Damani Leech said in an RTD news release.
The organization agreed to coordinate planning with RTD, the City and County of Denver, the Colorado Department of Transportation, the Denver Police Department and other partners in early 2027.
The agency has not run dedicated direct bus service from Metro Park-N-Ride lots since suspending it in 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
That service previously carried thousands of riders per game. Regular rail operations on the E and W lines to the Empower Field at Mile High station have remained the primary transit option.
“The enhanced service pilot being developed aligns with RTD’s commitment to delivering customer-focused transit service,” said Debra A. Johnson, RTD general manager and CEO, in the release. “By planning ahead with regional partners, we are collectively building a stronger and more connected transit experience for the Broncos fans and the broader community.”
The proposed transit service would rely on designated bus parking lanes and coordinated traffic management plans to support efficient bus ingress and egress, bus parking and customer boarding before and after games.
