Minibike rider dies from injuries in head-on crash with SUV
The 23-year-old rider of a minibike involved in a June 29 head-on collision with an SUV has died of his injuries, according to a statement from the Aurora Police Department.
The identity of the driver of the minibike, an Aurora man, will be determined by the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office pending an autopsy and notification of family.
Patrol officers from the APD were called to the scene of the crash around 6:45 p.m. June 29 at the intersection of East Colfax Avenue and Powhaton Road.
Investigators later determined that the Subaru SUV was heading east on Colfax Avenue when the westbound minibike veered into the eastbound lanes and collided head-on with the Subaru.
The minibike rider was not wearing a helmet, according to the official report, and was rushed to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.
APD spokesperson Joe Moylan told The Denver Gazette that at this time investigators do not suspect alcohol or speed as contributing to the accident.
The driver of the SUV remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation.
No charges have been filed.
This incident comes on the heels of a string of minibike and e-bike accidents in the metro area.
On May 7, a 13-year-old boy riding a rentable e-bike collided with a vehicle. The e-bike rider was traveling southbound in the crosswalk at West Colfax Avenue and North Knox Court at 4:39 p.m. when the rider was struck by a Volkswagen traveling 35 mph.
The boy later died of injuries on June 10.
In June, a 35-year-old e-bike rider was struck and killed on Interstate 70, near Steele Street. The rider, according to the Denver Police Department, was attempting to flee law enforcement.
After eluding police in Brighton, a teenager was ticketed and had his minibike towed.
Also in June, two teenagers who reportedly ran a stop sign while riding an e-bike were hit by a delivery driver and transported to the hospital with serious injuries, according to the Boulder Police Department.
