Car chase over scenic mountain pass hit speeds exceeding 107 MPH, says sheriff’s office

A high-speed vehicular pursuit traveled over a scenic Colorado mountain pass in recent days.

According to a report from the Park County Sheriff’s Office, at about 9 p.m. on July 4 a deputy attempted to stop a vehicle that was traveling southbound through downtown Bailey on U.S. Highway 285 at a high rate of speed. The driver didn’t stop, but instead allegedly accelerated, leading to a pursuit over Kenosha Pass. This pass tops out at 9,984 feet of elevation and is known for attracting the masses when fall colors appear.

Despite deputies deploying spike strips at Antero Junction, the driver reportedly continued southbound over the pass, allegedly hitting speeds of more than 107 miles per hour and traveling through the town of Jefferson at an estimated 90 miles per hour before running the red light at the road’s intersection in Fairplay.

Additional spike strips were deployed, which were successful in disabling the passenger-side tires of the vehicle. The pursuit ultimately ended on Chaffee County’s Trout Creek Pass with a 21-year-old suspect taken into custody without further incident.

In total, the chase as described would mean traveling about 60 miles, per Google Maps.

The suspect was charged with felony eluding, speeding at 40 miles per hour or more over the posted speed limit, reckless driving, passing on the left when prohibited, driving without a valid license, operating an uninsured vehicle, and additional traffic offenses. He’s being held in Chaffee County Jail on a $50,000 cash-only bond.

“This incident serves as a reminder of the dangers created when motorists choose to flee from law enforcement,” wrote the Park County Sheriff’s Office following the chase. “The reckless actions of one individual placed countless members of our community, as well as the responding deputies, at risk.”

All suspects are to be considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. All charges are merely accusations.
