NEA elects Princess Moss as next president | CLASSNOTES

The nation’s largest teachers union elected Princess Moss as its next president during the National Education Association’s (NEA) annual meeting in Denver.

Moss will replace Becky Pringle, who is leaving after reaching the union’s two-term limit.

The NEA is the largest teacher union in the United States with about 3 million members.

Moss, 65, handily won the election with 50.3% of the vote, according to the NEA. Kate Dias, who is the president of the Connecticut Education Association, nabbed 31.2%. Sean Spiller, former president of the New Jersey Education Association, came in third with 17.4% of the vote. Tania Kappner was a distant fourth with 0.9%.

Spiller’s candidacy had made national news. He faces a lawsuit alleging that he directed more than $40 million in union dues to groups to support his failed campaign for New Jersey governor.

Spiller has not been accused of a crime. But the allegations came as delegates were preparing to choose the person to lead the union and serve as one of the nation’s most influential voices on education policy.

The lawsuit does not challenge unions’ ability to participate in politics. Instead, it alleges Spiller breached his fiduciary duty by overseeing expenditures that ultimately benefited his own gubernatorial campaign.

The NEA expected about 7,000 educators from across the United States to attend the organization’s Representative Assembly that was held in Denver from Friday through Tuesday.

The event was not open to the press.
