Happy birthday, Colorado — and Colorado sports.

Leading into the state’s 150th birthday Aug. 1, The Denver Gazette has partnered with the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame to publicize the definitive list of Colorado’s top 150 sports moments.

For Nos. 50 to 1, Colorado Sports Hall of Fame historian Dave Plati coordinated a 19-member committee to rank in order what they considered the top moments. The No. 1 moment will be revealed July 31. Plati and Broncos icon Jim Saccomano will unveil the list weekly on a Colorado Sports Hall of Fame podcast at coloradosports.org/podcast/.

No. 20 — Nov. 23, 2001

No. 3 Nebraska rolled into 14th-ranked Colorado’s Folsom Field ranked first in the BCS Standings and as a 9.5-point favorite, but the Buffaloes had different ideas. CU put on a clinic in building a 35-3 lead early in the second quarter en route to a 62-36 win. Overall, CU ran roughshod through the Nebraska defense, rushing for 380 yards and eight touchdowns. Chris Brown ran for 198 yards and scored six touchdowns with Bobby Purify adding 154 and a score to lead an unstoppable Buffs offense that averaged almost 9 yards per play. Colorado stole the Big 12 North Division title from the Huskers. A win over Texas in the title game the following week gave CU the Big 12 title.
