Denver police officer fired after assault, another cited for reckless driving
Two Denver police officers were cited for separate incidents, the department announced Wednesday evening.
Officer Gabriel Lucero was seen assaulting an individual at a business on 16th Street, the Denver Police Department officials said. Lucero was already on probation at the time of the incident and was fired Wednesday, according to a press release.
Ofc. Javon Leach was seen driving the wrong way on Larimer Street and failing to yield to a traffic stop, according to the department. He has been reassigned while the case makes its way through the judicial process.
Lucero, who joined the department in 2025 and was most recently assigned to District Two, was involved in an assault in the 500 block of 16th Street just before 1 a.m. on May 22.
He was seen assaulting an individual before stepping away as others also assaulted them, police said.
As building security and an off-duty Denver officer were escorting the group out, Lucero identified himself as an officer and tried to use his badge to get back inside the business, according to the release. The off-duty officer then asked Lucero for his name; he provided a false one and no other information.
Lucero faces charges of third-degree assault, official misconduct and false reporting.
Leach, who joined the department in 2023 and was most recently assigned to District 3 Patrol, was seen by other officers driving the wrong way out of a parking lot in the 2000 block of Larimer Street around 1:41 a.m. on June 21, according to the release.
Those officers tried to stop the vehicle, but Leach did not heed their commands and left the area, police said. Then, about 10 minutes later, his vehicle was seen speeding northbound on Park Avenue West.
An officer tried pulling Leach over by turning on their lights, but he did not yield. He was cited for reckless driving and eluding.
The department will conduct an administrative review of Leach’s incident after his criminal case has made its way through the courts.
